Losing you made me feel that I had never actually lost anything else before, and that every subsequent loss would now have to be weighed against this new definition.

I miss everything and everybody, and I haven't even left yet.

Apparently it's been 69 weeks since I posted a live journal. Life is different.

Here are some things I have learned in the past weekend.
-I hate going to bars. There is just no way around it. Not even Travis's presence can make me like it. I will never be the kind of person who goes to bars on a regular basis. There are a couple of bars that are okay sometimes, like Sidebar and the Limelight (in SA), but I probably would hate any other bar chosen at random. I think in the long run it is a good thing to hate bars, at the very least I will save a lot of money.

-There are actually some good restaurants around my apartment, including a Thai place and an Indian place - which are my two favorite kinds of food!

-The Darjeeling Limited was pretty good, but it's time for Wes Anderson to start making a different movie. The Royal Tenenbaums was a great film, but that doesn't mean Wes Anderson should try to recreate it with every subsequent film. Also, there were some problematic racial issues in the Darjeeling Limited.

-I can't get a lot of work done with Travis around, but I can work very fast and efficiently when he's gone and I have to make up for all of the slacking off I did.

I can't wait for the semester to be over - which is very very soon. It is crazy that in less than a month I will be finished with my first semester of grad school. I'm not really sure how all the work I have to do is going to fit in to the next four weeks, but I guess it will. Somehow it always fits. Next semester I start my thesis, which is really exciting.

Why is it that feminist issues and my personal feminism are becoming more and more important to me now that I'm in a decidedly less feminist-friendly environment? It makes me appreciate the progressiveness of Southwestern more and more. It really spoiled me into thinking that I would encounter like-minded people wherever I go. I am realizing now that that is not the case.

Barf on a narf.

Avi came home early with me to get her out of the flea-hell that is Travis's house. I felt really sad and guilty about taking her away from Travis early, but I really love having her here. She is the best kitty in the world and we are having so much fun together. Even though I have put her through a lot of traumatizing things lately, such as giving her three baths (for the fleas), taking her on a three-hour car trip, and exposing her to my large, hostile asshole cats, she still seems to love me and sits in my lap all the time. We'll see how she feels later this week when I get her spayed.
I was in Houston last weekend to visit Travis and to take care of him after he had his wisdom teeth taken out. It sucked a lot for him, but I didn't mind making him milkshakes and getting him water and ice packs. He came to visit this past weekend for my birthday, which was a decent one. Yesterday we napped for a little while and when we woke up Avi was lying between our pillows and it was the most perfect, picturesque moment with my little family and I felt so happy. Travis got me an awesome swatch and the cutest water bottle that exists in the world for me birthday, and I got a cute dress and a clock for my apartment from my parents.
Summer is just about over, and I will miss having nothing but time on the weekends for Travis, because when we start school we will have other obligations. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Avi just wrote that.
I start school on Thursday, and I am pretty excited about that. I can't wait to start being showered with praise again because I need that all the time! I need to get frames for my degree and phi beta kappa certificate so I can carry them around with me at all times and make everyone else feel stupid. Just kidding, Avi wrote that too. I really love learning.

Hello! It is Travis and Sarah and we are in Durango, Colorado! So far we have had many adventures and seen many sights. Here is a list of animals we have seen:
-2 foxes
-a skunk
-magpies galore
-a baltimore oriole (or some similar bird)
-mule deer in droves, including a mommy with two little babies
-trout
-elk
-chipmunks
-squirrels
-a stuffed mountain lion
-wooden bears
-mountain jays
-humming birds
-lots of pretty butterflies
-a gopher
-noisy ravens
-three types of lizards
And many other animals, I am sure.
We have seen mountains, desert, snow, more mountains, and sand dunes from a distance. We have been crammed into a car with a noisy granny. Today we saw the cliff dwellings of the Anasazi people, who are all dead now but made some really amazing dwellings.
Now we are staying at the cutest little cabin and we are soooooo happy. Tomorrow we are going to go to New Mexico, where we are likely to see many other noteworthy things.

The craziest thing happened this week. Dennis Quaid came to my work to sign autographs for the employees because HEB is sponsoring an event for his charity. He was in the receiving area in the back and all the employees were allowed to go back there and see him for about 30 seconds. It was really funny, as if Dennis Quaid were some attraction at a freak show. I don't care about Dennis Quaid at all but I had my shirt signed anyway because I thought it would be funny. All of my managers were super stressed about the event. It was a silly time.
Travis visited me this weekend and we had a wonderful time even though I am a little sick. He and Jason carpooled so we spent Friday night with Jason watching Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Travis and I went to see the bats last night, but they didn't come out until it was really dark so we couldn't see them very well. Travis got the general idea, though. Bats times 1 million. We also decided we needed to see Borat again so we watched that last night. This afternoon we met up with Jason and went to Coco's, where Jason tried the shaved ice, which consists of shaved ice, syrup, and condensed milk over various strangely flavored jellies (such as lemon grass) and other things like beans and oatmeal. It was too weird to be very enjoyable, but not terrible.

May felt like such a long month, so much happened. I started working at my new store, which seems better overall than the one in Georgetown, except for the fact that they scheduled me totally outside my availability this week, so I will have to deal with that. I feel more and more embarrassed about my job, because I am obviously way too smart and overqualified for it. Every time someone asks why I work there I have to explain that even as a college graduate, it is very very hard to get a professional-level job when you can only work for a few months, and I really want some money so I took what I could get. What I really want is just to be in school again.
I moved out of my apartment a couple of weeks ago, which is sad. It was the first place that I really felt was mine, and so many good things happened there. I am going to miss it.
The best part of the summer has definitely been seeing Travis and Avi. So far I've visited Travis twice and he has visited me once. We just can't seem to find a reason compelling enough to keep us from driving to see each other every weekend. I visited him in Houston this weekend, which was wonderful. Avi is the greatest kitty ever even though she totally cut up my hand and legs during her many bouts of insane playing. We took her to the vet at the humane society to get her shots, and even though we had to wait for around 2 hours there, it was a fun experience because we got to see so many puppies and kitties. Travis and I also went to a screening of Troll 2 with the cast members, which was fun, and we saw Knocked Up, which I enjoyed much more than I thought I would. Travis is by far the best thing in my life right now and he makes me more consistently and intensely happy than anything else, and it is really not fair that I can't be with him all the time.

Overall, my trip to Toronto was pretty great, despite a little too much time spent in cramped quarters with my family. The best part of the trip was hanging out with Natalie, catching up, and meeting her friends. It made me wish we lived in the same city so much, because there are very few people I enjoy being around as much as I enjoy being around her. The second best part of the trip was spending our last day at Niagara Falls, which was so incredible. You'd think it would be cheesy, but the falls are just so huge and powerful that it is so worth seeing. We also went to a natural history museum, St. Lawrence Market, the Distillery District, the Bata Shoe Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. I'm totally in love with Canada now. It is such a nice place.
The day after we got back from Toronto was my SU commencement ceremony. As expected, the speeches were super boring, but it was kind of fun seeing all my friends walk and getting my diploma. After graduation, I went to a party at my parents' house with all my extended family, Travis, Patrick, and Jason.
Today I helped Travis move out. It was really really sad when he and Avi left. After today, Travis and I won't be able to see each other every day for at least a year, which is a terrible prospect. I don't know what I'll do with my time now.
Tonight I went with Summer, Margaret, and Larissa to see Bright Eyes at Bass Concert Hall, which was a really weird experience. The audience was completely terrible and a fight actually broke out between an obnoxious heckler and an annoyed audience member. It was crazy. I felt sad and nostalgic because I had to see Bright Eyes in a shitty environment and I no longer feel the way I did about them when I was 18. I sort of miss feeling so intensely about a band.
This week I don't have to go to work, so other than moving out I have no plans. I am going to visit Travis and Avi this weekend, which can't come soon enough.

So mostly really good things have been happening in my life right now, but they have been overshadowed by some really sucky things. Here are the good things:
-Travis and I got a kitten, Avi (short for Avital), and she is the best kitty ever and we are so in love with her. She is a 6 week old tortoiseshell and the perfect mixture of sweet, playful, and adorable. Travis is going to keep her over the summer and then I will probably keep her in my apartment in the fall.
-My last day at the Gtown HEB was Thursday, and I will be starting work at one close to my house in June (after jury duty...barf). I hated that place so much and I really think things will be much better at the new store. At the very least, it will be new awful people to deal with versus the same awful people day after day.
-I am in Toronto!!! We just arrived today and so far we haven't done anything except have dinner because we were hella tired, but I am super excited about seeing Natalie and exploring the city.

However, as of like 3:30 yesterday, it was not certain whether I could go to Toronto because I had not received my passport, despite the fact that I applied for it three months ago, and I had to go to the passport center in Houston yesterday to see if I could get it. I had to wait three and a half hours at the passport center alone with absolutely nothing to do and no way of finding out whether I could even get my passport for two and a half hours. So, for the first two and a half hours I basically had no idea what was going on or when I would get to talk to someone. I also had no way of knowing what to expect because it was impossible to talk to a person without physically going to the passport center, I just had to make an "appointment," which was just a meaningless procedure, and show up. Also, although Travis came to Houston with me, he couldn't come to the passport center because he just dropped me off and I had his wallet in my purse so he couldn't park anywhere. We met up with his parents for dinner, which was nice, but we didn't leave Houston until 8:00, then we didn't get back to Georgetown until 11:00. After getting to Georgetown, I had to get all my stuff together for Toronto and then we drove to Austin and I had to pack. All in all, the trip took 12 hours, which meant I had to leave my baby kitty all alone! Travis is staying at my apartment and using my car so he can take care of Avi and have a car or whatever. I miss our little family a lot already. When I get back from Toronto I have commencement the next day and Travis leaves with Avi and it's going to suck.

This weekend Travis and I celebrated our first anniversary (!!!!) with dinner at East Side Cafe, going to see the bats on Congress and not seeing any bats (well, we saw a few bats, just not the expected million billion), playing battleship at Bouldin Creek and kicking Travis's ASS!, and getting ice cream at Amy's. All in all, it was pretty perfect. It feels like we've been together so much longer than a year because we're so close, and yet it also feels like everything is still new and exciting. Everything is brighter and better because Travis is in my life.
We've been watching The Office a lot, but we finished the only season we have and soon we're going to start I, Claudius, which is an awesome old PBS miniseries about Rome.
Every day I hate the general populace a little more, mostly for blaming their stupidity and helplessness on me. I hope I never have to work in a customer service position again.

Here are some stupid things that have happened in the past couple of weeks:
-I saw 300, which I wanted to see because I thought it would be the kind of action epic I sometimes like, you know, really entertaining and rousing - the kind of movie that makes you clap at the end (in other words, a poor man's Lord of the Rings). However, it was completely awful and unbearable. First of all, it was just generally bad as a movie. The dialog was incredibly stupid, the narration was Wizard People-esque, and every single event was given equal dramatic weight, so consequently nothing stood out as particularly important. More importantly, however, 300 was incredibly racist; all of the villains were people of color and portrayed as either monsters, trannies, or trannies/monsters. The narration constantly emphasized their race and their otherness. It was also really sexist and homophobic (yet also homoerotic). What a waste of time. It is depressing that it's so popular.

-A really creepy 35ish man asked for my number at work. He has come through my line several times before and has also given me the creepiest looks, and I guess he finally got up the courage to ask for my number. I just pretended like he was joking and didn't say anything, but I should have told him that there are about 1,000 reasons why I would not give him my number, ever.

-Travis, Jason, and I went to a carnival in Gtown and, as expected (and desired), the carnies yelled some amusing things at us:
(To Travis): "Hey man, you gotta win your girl a prize!" (To me): "Hey Supermodel! You can win your man a prize too, girl!"
(To all): "You've gotta win the girl a prize, it's tradition. I'm just talking, it's tradition!"
Also one of them referred to me as either Jason or Travis's wife.

-My ribs still hurt from when I was sick several weeks ago, which limits my mobility somewhat and limits Travis's ability to squeeze me without me complaining. It's getting better, though.

-It is unseasonable cold today - in the low 30s - and rainy which is just pissing me off a lot.

-Generally, life sucks right now because of work and waiting and disappointment and confusion. I am trying to focus my attention outside myself on things other than just Travis, which is helping somewhat.

We spent our last few days in New York at my uncle's amazing apartment. On Friday night we went over to Nick's for sangria and games night, which was really fun and silly. On Saturday we went to the Museum of Sex and tried to go to Chelsea but got lost and eventually got sick of walking around in the snow and cold and went home for the rest of the evening. Having no other shoes but cheap canvas flats really sucked for walking around, because at the end of the day my feet were completely soaked with freezing water. Yesterday went better, we went to the Guggenheim and spent most of the day there. The building was really amazing and they had a great collection and it was more manageable in size than the MOMA. We went to bed really early because we had to wake up at 3:20 AM this morning to catch our flight. It was so ridiculously early that it was hard to feel anything, but somehow we were able to function. We flew into Houston and Travis's brother drove us back to Georgetown. Now I am sitting in my apartment wasting time before I take a nap, which I hope is a real marathon nap because I have already been awake for 12 hours. It is ridiculous how much work I have missed over the past few weeks, and I'm kind of half-hoping/half-fearing that I'll be fired.
Travis and I really wanted to just stay in New York and have my uncle take care of us indefinitely. It felt like we were there for much longer than we actually were, and it feels very strange and unreal to be back. Real life is not as fun as last week was.

Travis and I have been in New York since Monday. We were supposed to leave for Austin today, but our flight was cancelled due to bad weather and we won't be able to get another flight until Monday. Crazy!
We've had a really great time and we're actually pretty glad to get a couple more unexpected days here, though we're not sure what we're going to do yet.
Here's what we've done so far:
Monday:
We arrived in NY. There was a girl behind me on the plane who threw up almost the entire ride, which was not pleasant to listen to. When we got here, we walked around Williamsburg for awhile and went to a few shops. We met Nick for dinner in Manhattan and then went to a free show at Upright Citizens' Brigade, where we saw a comedian named Aziz Ansari, who was really funny.
Tuesday:
We walked around The Village and SoHo all day and "shopped" (we didn't actually buy anything). In the evening we had dinner with Nick at a vegan fast food restaurant, where I had vegan chicken salad, which was really yummy. They had every fast food dish you can imagine in vegan form and really great milkshakes.
Wednesday:
We spent most of the afternoon at The Museum of Natural History, where we were mainly interested in the animal and dinosaur exhibits. Afterwards, we went back to Brooklyn to go to Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co/826 NYC, which was pretty cool. In the evening we went to a dance performance of Edward Scissorhands at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which was really beautiful and amazing. Unbeknownst to us, that night the BAM was having their Spring Gala, which was a semi-formal event attending by a bunch of rich people and celebrities. We saw Alam Cumming and Iron Chef America's Mario Batali, which was unexpected and kind of exciting.
Thursday:
We went to the MOMA and left sooner than we wanted to to go to the Guggenheim, which turned out to be closed on Thursdays. We tried to go the Neue Gallerie, which is a gallery of German and Austrian art, but they were putting up a couple of installations and only one floor was open. They had a really stunning Klimt painting, but we only saw about 8 paintings total. We still had some time to kill because we were going to meet my uncle for dinner, so we bought some pastries and ate them on the steps of the Met, where we also went to the (boring) gift shop. We met my uncle for dinner at this fantastic vegetarian restaurant named Gobo, where we had indescribably good food. It was great seeing my uncle, and we're actually going to stay at his apartment this weekend to get out of Nick's hair for awhile. Travis's duffel bag broke on the plane, so we went to a sporting goods store and then to Kmart to find a new one, which was pretty ridiculous.
Today:
We got phone calls at 5:00 AM telling us that our flights had been canceled, so we spent most of the morning trying to figure out what the eff we were going to do and calling Continental over and over again to figure out our options. The best we could do was fly into Houston on Monday morning, which means travis will have to miss his morning classes and I will be late to work, but we'll live. It's snowing right now so we don't really know what we should do. So far we've just hung out at Nick's and watched TV. Hopefully we'll have a lot more fun over the next couple of days.

So in a few hours Travis and I are going to New York. It is very exciting and still unreal, because all week I have been hella sick and that has been preoccupying me. I feel better for the most part except for a heinous cough, which is now accompanied by a sharp pain in my side. I have to cough constantly but try to keep it in as long as possible because of the pain. AAHHH. I also got several nosebleeds in a restaurant today due to the sickness. Lame.
Coming back home at the end of this week is not something I'm looking forward. I am really nervous about what I'm going to find out when I get back. I'm going to try to convince travis to stay in New York with me forever.

I am finished with my first week of work, which was exhausting. I've settled into my job and for the most part know how to do everything, but I still have to ask other people how to do things at least once or twice a day, which makes me feel incompetent.
Valentines Day was amazing. Travis and I made a really yummy dinner - hearts of palm in lemon butter sauce over fettuchine topped with parmesean and a salad with olives and goat cheese. It was so good. It was such a perfect night.
Travis and I bought our plane tickets for a spring break trip to New York, which I'm really looking forward to. We're going to be staying with Nick Rider. We've started making a list of stuff we'd like to do, which makes it all the more exciting.

I'm actually pretty excited about Valentine's Day for the first time in years and years. Travis and I aren't doing anything big - we're just going to make dinner together and exchange cards and chocolates - but of course it's going to be great.
My first day of work was Saturday. Overall it went smoothly - no major mistakes, and everyone I interacted with was friendly. Travis and Patrick visited me, which brightened my day. I expect them to visit me every day, or else I will start hating them. I underestimated how exhausting standing for 8 hours would be. At the end of the day I could barely walk. I'm sure I'll get used to that, though and will build serious muscles.

12:24 am
During the past few days, the world seemed to have stopped. All of central Texas was buried under a layer of ice, which meant that school was cancelled and I had Travis all to myself for two extra days. We spent most of the time indoors due to the perilous driving conditions, playing Uno, watching movies and Six Feet Under, and taking occasional trips outside to play in the ice and stock up on groceries and more DVDs. It would probably be a semi-hellish situation if I hadn't spent the whole time with my favorite person in the whole world. So even though it was strange and unexpected, we had a wonderful time and I wish things could always be like this. Tomorrow life goes back to normal for everyone else, but I won't be going to class and I don't have a job yet, so I will have to find something to fill up the day.

04:36 pm
I got back from Houston today, where I spent the weekend with Travis, primarily to attend his cousin's wedding (he was an usher). We mostly did wedding and family related things, but it was a really great weekend (as usual). On Friday we went to the rehearsal dinner at Papasito's, which was pretty ridiculous for us because for dinner they brought out giant platters of meat and we just had to make tacos out of guacamole and cheese. We thought we'd want to get dinner elsewhere afterwards but then they brought out the most amazing, decadent tres leches cake I've ever had and we were very satisfied and full after that.
During the wedding, we thought about making it a double, but it was decidedly not the kind of wedding I want - it was very traditional and religious. It was also Scottish, and the groom and the groomsmen all wore kilts. The reception was mostly fun because we had a seated dance-off with Travis's brother and his friend, and then we danced on the floor and one of the photographers may have taken a picture of my butt.
The next morning Travis's family came over and we hung out with them until we took a very unsatisfying nap. On our way to dinner, we went to this warehouse lot that has almost all (or maybe all) of the presidents rendered in 12-foot bust form. Summer told us about it and I was really glad to see it in person because it was one of the most bizarre things I have ever seen. After dinner we saw Babel, which was incredibly intense and emotional and really excellent. We stayed up late watching various shows about animals, then we woke up early this morning so we could spend more time together before I had to go back to Austin.
Tomorrow I will start my job hunt in earnest. I really need a job so I'm not terribly bored while my friends are at school. If anyone wants to pay me for any of the following things, that would be ideal:
-Watching Bravo and VH1 programming all day long
-Following Travis to class and doing everything he does
-Being beautiful and good at psychology
-Playing sudoku
-Going to restaurants
I am really good at all of these things and I promise I won't let you down.
